Cherry - The red Diamond
Cherries arrived at the beginning of the Middle Age, from the banks of the Black Sea. The most popular variety then was the sour cherry, black and bitter. It was in the 19th Century that the fleshy and sweet cherry we love so much today took over. It was on the Ventoux hillsides, in the Valley of the Nesque and the hills surrounding Venasque that it really took off at the beginning of the 20th Century. It is an area where the amount of sunshine is very high.
With over 2700 hectares cultivated and a yeld of 15 000 to 20 000 tons, the Vaucluse remains the top French producer of cherries.
